For the young stunt player Yueh Wah, art imitated life on the set of the Shaw Brothers production martial arts period piece 'Ren pi deng long (1982)' when Yuen was seriously injured while doubling for lead actor Tony Liu costumed in white on a wire stunt designed for Yuen to be vertically elevated through a roof hatch while harnessed on a wire to meet an authentic flying bamboo lance. The stunt was mistimed with the sharp flying projectile aimed at Yuen right between the eyes. Yuen reacted with a quick-reflex protective spin-turn away with back facing the spear but it impaled him entering through his right shoulder blade and exiting his under-arm. The costumed Yuen was taken to the hospital with the bamboo pole still in his body and Yuen's costume stained with real blood doubling for theatrical gelatin blood.
