Jinnay Lahore Nahin Vekhya is a story of 1947, set in Lahore, immediately after partition. An immigrant family has been allotted a Haveli, abandoned by a Hindu family. After having spent many torturous months in ‘mohajir camps’, the family now looks forward with relief to the prospect of settling down in their new home and starting life anew. To their dismay, they find that the haveli is not totally abandoned - an old Hindu woman, the mother of owner Ratan Lal Johari, still lives in it. The presence of this old Hindu woman also irks some local ruffians, who believe that Pakistan now belongs only to Musalmans, and no infidel has any right to remain here! This point of view is opposed by the poet Nasir Kazmi, and the Moulvi of the local mosque. In the meantime, the old woman endears everybody around her because of her loving and helpful nature. Finally, when the old woman dies, a debate ensues in the community over the issue of the performance of her last rites.
The story is based on an actual incident and the dialogues of Nasir Kazmi are his own, taken from his letters and writings.
